A US district court has ordered the Pentagon to reverse its illegal decision designating artificial intelligence company Anthropic a supply chain threat. The US District Court for the Northern District of California issued the directive after reviewing the defense department's blacklist classification, according to a report by CNN.
Judge Rita Lin, who was appointed to the bench by former US President Joe Biden, ruled that the military blacklist violated the First and Fifth Amendments to the US Constitution. While acknowledging that defense officials hold broad authority to select commercial partners, she overturned the classification that deemed Anthropic unsafe for department work.
Judge Lin stated that a mere unsupported invocation of national security does not give the government a blank check to punish and persecute its critics.
Dispute over military restrictions
The federal dispute stems from a refusal by Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei to lift two specific usage restrictions on the company's Claude AI model. Amodei declined requests to allow the technology to be used for mass surveillance of American citizens or in autonomous weapons systems.
Anthropic explained that current artificial intelligence models remain insufficiently reliable to be safely deployed in autonomous weaponry. The company added that using AI for broad surveillance represents a direct violation of fundamental human rights.
Department of Defense officials countered that private commercial entities should not possess the power to restrict military operations or dictate defense policy.
Political pressure and military contracts
The judicial ruling follows public criticism from US President Donald Trump, who attacked Anthropic in February 2026 by describing the firm as a radically left, woke company.
Anthropic had previously secured a $200 million contract with the Department of Defense in July 2025. Under that agreement, Claude became the first artificial intelligence system approved for deployment across classified US military computer networks.
Following the disagreement over safety boundaries, Anthropic became the first American commercial firm publicly designated by the Pentagon as a supply chain threat.
