Amazon expands smart glasses use after 275,000 deliveries

Amazon is expanding the deployment of smart glasses for its delivery drivers following more than 275,000 completed package deliveries using the wearable technology.

The Seattle-based e-commerce giant reported that updated head-mounted devices will be rolled out across its logistics network throughout 2027.

The visual system projects parcel details, walking directions to doorstep destinations, and potential hazard warnings directly into a driver's field of view. By displaying information on optical lenses, the system aims to stop couriers from repeatedly shifting their attention between handheld smartphones, physical packages, and their surrounding environment.

The technology integrates computer vision, video cameras, artificial intelligence tools, precise geographical positioning, and heads-up visual display software. After a driver parks a vehicle, the glasses assist in locating specific parcels inside the delivery van, map out walking paths to the delivery point, and alert drivers to hazards such as dogs on a property.

Hardware design and vest controls

The hardware architecture includes a dedicated control unit embedded directly into the delivery driver's high-visibility vest. This vest module contains physical control buttons, a swappable battery pack, and a built-in emergency call button for safety.

To accommodate different workers, the frames support both prescription lenses and photochromic lenses, which automatically darken when exposed to sunlight during outdoor deliveries.

Amazon previously conducted extensive field trials of the technology in the United States, testing the system with more than 12 delivery partner companies and hundreds of drivers. A public demonstration in 2025 showed the glasses recognizing parcel shipping labels, generating turn-by-turn walking routes, and issuing audible voice warnings about obstacles.

Participation in the smart glasses program remains voluntary for independent delivery service partner owners and their employed drivers.

Delivery metrics and future expansion

Amazon has not yet published comparative metrics regarding delivery speeds, label recognition accuracy, error rates, or safety incident figures for drivers using the smart glasses compared to standard handheld devices.

Although the 275,000 completed deliveries demonstrate large-scale real-world testing, the lack of published comparative data means the exact productivity and safety gains cannot yet be independently evaluated.

Amazon relies heavily on independent Delivery Service Partners to handle last-mile logistics, the final and often most expensive stage of parcel transportation from distribution centers to homes. The planned expansion through 2027 represents one of the most prominent commercial applications of computer vision and wearable hardware in daily field operations.
