Russian small arms expert Konstantin Lazarev has praised the compact AK-12K assault rifle for improving combat efficiency in tight spaces.
Speaking to state news agency TASS, Lazarev highlighted the manoeuvrability of the shortened weapon when operating inside trenches and buildings.
The specialist noted that the AK-12K maintains performance levels nearly identical to the full-size standard model, with virtually no difference in ballistics between the two versions.
Lazarev said military personnel welcomed the introduction of the compact model because shorter rifle barrels provide clear operational advantages in restricted environments.
Prior to the introduction of the AK-12K, compact options in this category were limited to older models such as the AKS-74U and the AK-105.
The AKS-74U was introduced in the late 1970s as a shortened carbine variant of the AK-74, whereas the AK-105 was developed as a modern carbine based on the AK-74M platform.
Design features of the AK-12K
The primary structural difference between the AK-12K and the baseline AK-12 model is a shortened barrel measuring 290 millimetres in length.
The rifle is equipped with a folding telescopic stock that allows users to adjust length of pull for different shooting positions and body armor.
It also incorporates Picatinny mounting rails on both the handguard and the receiver cover to accommodate modern tactical optics and accessories.
Picatinny rails are standardised rail brackets widely used on military firearms to attach red dot sights, magnification scopes, tactical flashlights, and laser aiming modules.
The baseline AK-12 rifle was designed by Kalashnikov Concern to serve as the modern standard service rifle for Russian infantry units.
Production increases for military service
In April, Russian manufacturing facilities increased production volumes of the AK-12K to meet rising demand from military personnel.
The weapon has seen widespread adoption among soldiers serving in the special military operation zone, where close-quarters combat capability is required.
State news agency TASS reported that feedback from troops on the front lines confirmed strong user satisfaction with the shortened model's handling characteristics.
Kalashnikov Concern, located in Izhevsk, produces the majority of Russian military small arms and continues to adapt its firearm lines based on combat operational experience.
