Airbus has completed a three-day Ground Vibration Test on its new A350F freighter in Toulouse. The trials confirmed that the aircraft structure behaves predictably under aerodynamic and vibration loads before its first flight.

During the tests, engineers intentionally vibrated the plane at various frequencies using two distinct methods. The team activated the aerodynamic surfaces of the A350F at set frequencies and used external electrodynamic shakers attached to the wingtips, rear fuselage, and engines.

A network of accelerometers monitored the aircraft, measuring accelerations and resonant vibrations in real time. Engineers analyzed data after each cycle to adjust the next phase of testing.

The main goal of the trial was to verify computer models for the A350F. Airbus is using the test data to refine finite element and aeroelastic models that calculate structural loads, deformations, and allowable flight regimes.

Sensor Integration and Test Results

To gather data quickly, Airbus combined its standard Flight Test Instrumentation system with additional autonomous sensors installed specifically for the trial. This approach collected a large volume of information without significantly extending the test duration.

Airbus reported encouraging results, noting that the physical behavior of the A350F closely matched calculated predictions. Teams are now finishing data processing to update the mathematical model of the plane.

Preparation for the trial took about two years. The work involved specialists in final assembly, flight control systems, vibration testing, flight instrumentation, aerodynamics, aeroelasticity, and mass distribution.

Upcoming Flight Test Program

Completing the ground tests clears the way for the A350F to begin its flight test program. Airbus will conduct flight vibration tests during the first three months of flying.

During those flights, engineers will gradually increase speeds and altitudes to test the aircraft for flutter, which causes dangerous self-excited oscillations in the wings, tail unit, and other components. Tests will push the freighter to its calculated maximum dive speed and limit Mach number.

Before the vibration trial, Airbus completed ground tests on the first flight-ready A350F at the final assembly line in Toulouse. Engineers in Bremen separately tested the main deck cargo door mechanism and the cargo loading system. Results from the upcoming flight tests will serve as a key milestone for commercial certification.
