About 8 in 10 public schools in Brazil's basic education system have internet speed and Wi-Fi coverage considered adequate, according to a survey by the Ministry of Education's National Strategy for Connected Schools monitoring panel, known as Enec.
The survey found that 79.7% of the schools analyzed met the internet speed parameters considered adequate, while 80.7% had Wi-Fi coverage within recommended standards.
Almost all of the schools monitored, 98.9%, had adequate electrical power conditions, the data showed.
Overall, 108,658 schools were classified at level 4 or 5 on the Connected Schools Indicator, meaning they fall within the recommended parameters. That figure represents about 79% of the 138,086 schools monitored nationwide. The data refer to July 2026.
How the survey measured connectivity
The panel evaluated three factors at each school: electrical power, internet speed and Wi-Fi coverage. For internet speed to count as adequate, it has to be compatible with each school's needs. Wi-Fi coverage is considered adequate when the network is well distributed throughout the school and can support simultaneous access by multiple users.
The National Strategy for Connected Schools is a Ministry of Education initiative that tracks digital infrastructure across Brazil's public Basic Education network, which includes early childhood, elementary and secondary schools run by state and municipal governments.
The classification levels explained
The Connected Schools Indicator sorts schools into six levels, from 0 to 5, based on their power supply, internet speed and Wi-Fi network:
- Level 0: no internet connection or no adequate power supply, outside the recommended parameters
- Level 1: inadequate internet speed and no Wi-Fi network, outside the parameters
- Level 2: inadequate internet speed and inadequate Wi-Fi network, outside the parameters
- Level 3: adequate internet speed but no Wi-Fi network, outside the parameters
- Level 4: adequate internet speed but insufficient Wi-Fi network, within the parameters
- Level 5: adequate internet speed and adequate Wi-Fi network, within the parameters
Schools reaching level 4 or 5 are the ones counted among the roughly 79% considered to have ideal connectivity in the July 2026 survey.
