Zakynthos reports eight tourist rape cases in 20 days

Eight female tourists were taken to Zakynthos Hospital after reporting they were raped over a 20-day period between June 15 and today. Figures from the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees show a sharp increase from the same period last year, when two such cases were recorded.

Authorities activated health and legal protocols immediately for each case, notifying the police and competent prosecutorial officials. All victims underwent necessary gynaecological and forensic examinations. One incident involved an Italian tourist who required specialized hospital care for severe injuries caused by sexual abuse.

Hospital strain and security

The federation highlighted severe pressure on Zakynthos Hospital, operating under continuous duty. It noted that the hospital's daily workload compares to large Athens hospitals handling 800 to 1,000 patients per shift every four days.

The rise in violent incidents has placed authorities on alert, emphasizing the need to reinforce policing and healthcare services on the island.
