Windows setup requires five key steps after installation

German technology publication Chip has outlined five essential actions that computer users should take immediately after installing the Microsoft Windows operating system.

Specialists at the technical portal recommended checking system updates, running diagnostics, verifying security controls, adjusting privacy settings, and creating a full system backup once initial setup is complete.

Journalists at the outlet said the first step after setting up Windows is to reopen the Windows Update tool. They explained that an installation image does not always contain the latest security patches and system updates, meaning users must install them manually if necessary.

For the second step, experts advised performing a quick diagnostic check of the operating system. PC owners should open System Monitor to inspect system files, storage drives, drivers, services, and other operating system components.

Security checks and privacy settings

The third recommendation requires users to open the Windows Security section and verify that all device protection systems are working properly.

Following the security check, journalists said users need to enter the Privacy and Security section. They advised denying applications access to location data, the camera, the microphone, and other personal data if the software does not strictly require it.

Windows is the flagship desktop operating system developed by Microsoft, running on personal computers worldwide. Chip, founded in Germany, is a leading technology publication that tests software, hardware, and digital consumer products. Integrated features such as Windows Security provide built-in malware protection, firewall controls, and system health checks for personal computers.

System backups and disk storage

The final mandatory action named by Chip specialists is creating a full system backup. Experts explained that users should save this backup at the exact moment when all Windows systems are fully configured and operating normally.

Creating a full backup saves an exact image of the operating system state, allowing users to restore their computer if files become corrupted or hardware fails.

The recommendations follow a separate report published in early October by technology portal MakeUseOf regarding Windows disk management. Writers at MakeUseOf stated that the size of the Windows Recycle Bin is an individual parameter set by the operating system.

They explained that Windows automatically allocates 10 percent of the first 40 gigabytes of disk space to the Recycle Bin, followed by approximately 5 percent of any remaining storage capacity on the drive.

MakeUseOf is an online publication providing technology guides, software reviews, and computer tutorials. The Recycle Bin in Windows serves as a temporary storage area for deleted files, reserving space on internal drives until files are permanently erased.
