Wildfires Strike Ambato and Guamote in Central Ecuador

Firefighters in central Ecuador responded to two separate wildfires in the municipalities of Ambato and Guamote on Tuesday, according to emergency services.

The first blaze broke out in the Apagua hamlet, located within the Ambatillo parish of Ambato in Tungurahua province. The Integrated Security Service ECU911 said an emergency alert entered at 11:20 am, reporting a fire of considerable size in the area.

By 8:30 pm, emergency officials reported that the fire in Apagua had affected a preliminary area of seven hectares. No injuries have been reported, and monitoring cameras operated by ECU911 continue to track the emergency.

Emergency response in Tungurahua

A team of 25 firefighters from companies X1, X2, and X3 of the Ambato Fire Department deployed to combat the flames. They received support from personnel of the Cevallos Fire Department, water tankers from municipal utility EMAPA, and an ambulance crew from the Ministry of Health. National Police officers were also present at the scene to assist with emergency operations.

To coordinate the response, authorities established a Unified Command Post at the ECU911 Zonal 3 facility. The command center provides emergency dispatch and video surveillance across the central mountain region for municipal fire departments and national health services.

Ambato, the capital of Tungurahua province, is situated in the central Andean highlands of Ecuador, where dry vegetation during certain months can increase fire risk.

Reactivated blaze in Chimborazo

While emergency crews worked in Tungurahua, a second wildfire reactivated in the neighboring province of Chimborazo. A 911 call alerted authorities to renewed flames along the road to Cebadas in the Guamote canton.

First response personnel deployed to the location to manage the blazes. Official reports confirmed that emergency teams remain on site, though authorities did not specify the exact time the fire reactivated.

Guamote is a high-altitude agricultural canton situated in the Andean region of central Ecuador. Local emergency agencies maintain ongoing coordination across both provinces as crews work to contain the blazes.
