Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has unveiled the ID. California Cruise, its first all-electric camper van, at the Caravan Salon 2026 trade fair in Germany.
The new model combines the electric driving experience with camping functionality by incorporating a dedicated sleeping setup, blackout window curtains, and removable outdoor furniture.
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, headquartered in Hannover, Germany, produces light commercial vehicles for the Volkswagen Group. The California lineup has long served as the manufacturer's flagship line of factory-built camper vans, historically based on Transporter platforms.
Camping features and interior design
Inside the cabin, the ID. California Cruise features a sleeping area designed to accommodate two people, measuring 2.03 metres in length and 1.20 metres in width. Volkswagen has equipped the bed with a folding comfort mattress that measures nine centimetres in thickness.
Ventilation grilles are built into the front side windows, while blackout curtains cover all windows throughout the vehicle. Buyers can also specify an optional panoramic glass roof featuring its own dedicated blackout shade.
The van comes supplied with two camping chairs and a table. Volkswagen stated that the camping equipment is designed for straightforward storage within the vehicle structure when not in use.
To develop the specialized camping equipment, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles collaborated with equipment provider Stuff Bubble. The partnership allows the standard ID. Buzz cabin to transform into a fully equipped camping vehicle within a few minutes.
The interior features custom seat upholstery specific to the California line along with accenting wood trim. Exterior styling details include California badging and custom Cruise logos.
Power supply and camping mode
A key technological feature of the vehicle is its Vehicle-to-Load, or V2L, support. Utilizing a PowerSocket adapter, the van serves as a mobile power bank for external electrical equipment while parked at a campsite.
Vehicle-to-Load technology allows an electric vehicle's high-voltage traction battery to supply alternating current electricity to external appliances, enabling off-grid power without requiring a separate gas-powered generator.
The power system delivers up to 2 kilowatts of continuous power and up to 3.6 kilowatts of instantaneous peak power. That capacity can run coffee makers, laptop computers, kitchen appliances, and other electric devices, as well as recharge electric bicycles and scooters.
Volkswagen has also introduced a dedicated California Mode for camping operations. The setting allows users to operate select interior lighting, USB power ports, and key comfort features overnight or continuously for up to 48 hours.
Battery options and driving range
The ID. California Cruise is built on the ID. Buzz Pro model and will be offered in both short-wheelbase and long-wheelbase configurations.
The short-wheelbase variant is equipped with a 79 kilowatt-hour battery delivering a driving range of up to 461 kilometres under the European WLTP testing standard. The long-wheelbase version carries an 86 kilowatt-hour battery, extending driving range to up to 487 kilometres.
The Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure, or WLTP, is the standard laboratory test used across Europe to determine energy consumption and driving range for passenger and commercial vehicles.
Digital connectivity and pricing
Volkswagen is updating its California App to include specialized tools for electric camping trips. Drivers can search for charging stations along their journey and integrate charging stops directly into route planning.
The system also incorporates Plug and Charge support, enabling compatible charging stations to authenticate the vehicle and initiate power transfer automatically without requiring physical payment cards or manual app authorization.
Volkswagen announced a starting price of 60,761 euros for the ID. California Cruise in Germany. The manufacturer plans to begin initial customer deliveries in early 2027, with additional electric California models scheduled to follow in subsequent years.
