Vitamin K is the only dietary nutrient among several tested that consistently correlates with bone strength and internal bone structure, according to a study by Australian researchers.

The findings, published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Nutrients, derived from an analysis of 108 patients who had undergone hip surgery. Researchers compared individuals who suffered a femoral neck fracture against those who did not.
The research team assessed patient levels of vitamins K, D, C, and E, as well as B-group vitamins, zinc, and various other nutritional indicators. They also conducted detailed examinations of the overall strength and internal microstructure of each patient's bone tissue.
Femoral neck fractures occur in the upper section of the thigh bone near the hip joint, a critical structural area vulnerable to fragility and breaks in older patients. While clinical nutrition studies frequently analyze multiple vitamins together to gauge their combined effect on skeletal health, only indicators associated with vitamin K demonstrated a consistent relationship with bone condition in this study.
Role of active osteocalcin in bone density
Specifically, the researchers discovered that the active form of osteocalcin was associated with greater strength in the femur, a thicker cortical layer, and a denser internal bone structure. Osteocalcin is a specialized protein found in bone tissue that relies on vitamin K to become fully functional.
The cortical layer represents the hard outer shell of the bone, providing structural rigidity and resistance to impact. Without sufficient vitamin K, osteocalcin remains inactive and unable to bind calcium effectively during bone mineralization.
In contrast to the active form, inactive forms of osteocalcin were detected far more frequently in patients displaying signs of heightened bone fragility. The study authors noted that vitamin K is essential for proper bone tissue mineralization, as it enables osteocalcin to bind calcium and integrate the mineral into the bone matrix.
Study limits and prior vitamin research
Despite the observed correlation between vitamin K metrics and healthier bone parameters, the authors emphasized that their study does not prove that taking vitamin K supplements by itself reduces the risk of suffering fractures.
The report, written by science editor Ekaterina Grafskaya for 247 News Agency, also noted prior medical findings showing that a deficiency in vitamin D is linked to an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer.
Vitamin K occurs naturally in green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale, as well as broccoli and fermented foods. Bone mineralization requires a complex interplay of proteins and dietary minerals, and health experts recommend maintaining balanced nutrition to support skeletal strength throughout life.
