The Venezuelan government announced on Tuesday that it has reached an agreement with Israel to create a coordination mechanism to provide consular services in both countries.
Venezuela severed diplomatic relations with Israel in 2009 under orders from then-President Hugo Chavez, who governed from 1999 to 2013, in support of Palestine.
The new rapprochement follows a recent visit by an Israeli humanitarian delegation to the Caribbean nation to assist in recovery efforts after a double earthquake on June 24.
Humanitarian Delegation and Historical Ties
In a statement published on social media, the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said both governments recognize the importance of the connection between the State of Israel and the resident Jewish community in Venezuela.
The foreign ministry highlighted that the Jewish community constitutes an important bridge of historical friendship between the two countries.
