The United States Geological Survey recorded five earthquakes across the country on Saturday, August 1, 2026, with the strongest centered near a Southern California desert community.

The largest event, a magnitude 3.3 quake, struck at 11:51 a.m. (UTC-5) about 17 kilometers east of Desert Hot Springs, California. The tremor originated at a depth of 7.3 kilometers, at coordinates 33.979 degrees north and 116.321 degrees west, according to USGS data.

About 20 minutes earlier, at 11:31 a.m., a magnitude 2.6 quake was recorded 32 kilometers southeast of Mina, Nevada, at a depth of 11.5 kilometers.

Earlier Activity

The day’s seismic activity began in the early morning hours. At 6:50 a.m., a magnitude 2.7 earthquake struck 8 kilometers east-southeast of Cloverdale, in northern California, at a depth of 4.1 kilometers.

Two quakes hit Alaska within two minutes of each other just before that. At 6:38 a.m., a magnitude 2.5 tremor was recorded 37 kilometers southwest of Skwentna at a depth of 95.6 kilometers. At 6:37 a.m., a second magnitude 2.5 event occurred 78 kilometers north of Chickaloon at a depth of 13.6 kilometers.

Why California Shakes So Often

California experiences frequent seismic activity because it sits on the boundary between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate. The San Andreas Fault is part of a broader system of active faults running through the state that continuously releases energy through small, medium, and occasionally large earthquakes. Specialists consider California likely to continue experiencing significant seismic activity for decades to come, given its geological position.

Alaska leads the United States in total earthquakes recorded annually, according to historical data. Other states with high seismic activity include Hawaii, Nevada, Washington, Utah, and Puerto Rico.

Early Warning System

ShakeAlert is the official earthquake early warning system developed for the US West Coast. The system detects a quake within its first seconds and sends automatic warnings before the strongest seismic waves reach nearby cities. Alerts can be received through the MyShake app, Wireless Emergency Alerts, Android Earthquake Alerts, and compatible state emergency systems. Depending on distance from the epicenter, residents may receive a few seconds of advance notice.

The USGS detects dozens to hundreds of seismic events of varying magnitudes every day across the country. Most are minor and go unfelt by residents but are captured by seismological stations and used in scientific studies of tectonic behavior.

What Scientists Cannot Do

No scientific method currently exists that can predict when, where, or at what magnitude an earthquake will occur. Modern monitoring systems can detect a quake once it begins and issue early warnings for certain regions, but cannot anticipate one before it happens.
