The United States stopped avocado imports from Mexico's primary producing region of Michoacan on Wednesday due to security concerns, local authorities and a producers association announced. The Association of Avocado Producers and Exporting Packers of Mexico stated that authorities have not permitted any fruit shipments for export.
Michoacan is the largest exporter of avocados to the United States. The state government called the delivery suspension a precautionary measure following the arrest of organized crime leaders in the area.
Embassy operations and inspection history
The United States Embassy in Mexico announced that it suspended all operations in Michoacan because of a threat against American interests. United States officials routinely inspect avocado packing plants in Mexico before shipment.
This is not the first time security issues have disrupted trade. Shipments stopped temporarily in 2024 after attackers targeted two inspectors in Michoacan state.
