Ukrainian defense developer Ratel Robotics has introduced a new strike FPV drone designated the K1, designed to attack ground targets up to 30 kilometres away from its operator.

The uncrewed aerial vehicle combines long-range flight capability with payload capacity for strike missions. Ratel Robotics stated that the aircraft can remain airborne for up to 35 minutes, reach top speeds of up to 75 kilometres per hour, and carry explosive payloads weighing up to 2 kilograms.

To transmit live video feeds back to the pilot, the K1 relies on a digital signal channel. The manufacturer confirmed that communication between the aircraft and its operator can also be established using SpaceX's Starlink satellite network.

Flight capabilities and control systems

Despite its extended operational range, the K1 model relies on manual pilot control. Ratel Robotics noted that the aircraft does not feature onboard autonomous navigation systems, automatic takeoff or landing capabilities, or an automated return-to-launch point routine.

First-person view, or FPV, drones are aircraft operated remotely using live camera feeds streamed directly to goggles or visual displays worn by the pilot. While standard commercial and military FPV platforms often use analog video transmitters that suffer from signal distortion, digital channels deliver higher visual clarity and stronger resistance to electronic interference.

Integrating satellite connectivity such as Starlink enables uncrewed systems to bypass traditional radio line-of-sight restrictions. Starlink, a constellation of low-Earth orbit satellites developed by SpaceX, delivers high-speed internet links that allow operators to maintain stable control across long distances without depending on local cellular towers or vulnerable radio masts.

Next generation and interceptor aircraft

Ratel Robotics is currently preparing the next version of the strike drone. The company plans to introduce design modifications after completing comprehensive testing and incorporating operational feedback from field use of the K1.

Based in Ukraine, Ratel Robotics focuses on designing land-based and aerial uncrewed systems for defense applications. The technology developer previously created ground-based combat and logistics robots intended to assist troops in complex combat environments.

The presentation of the K1 comes as Ukrainian forces and military developers test other advanced uncrewed platforms. The Ukrainian military is currently evaluating the Spys interceptor drone, capable of reaching speeds of up to 600 kilometres per hour, while domestic engineers have also unveiled the Zirka interceptor drone, which can exceed 340 kilometres per hour.

Interceptor drones form a specialized class of defensive uncrewed aerial systems engineered to track, pursue, and destroy incoming aerial targets. Unlike ground-strike models built for loitering or payload delivery, interceptor platforms prioritize high speed to eliminate airborne threats before they reach designated positions.
