Ukrainian car sales fall 27% in August as market shrinks

The market for new passenger cars in Ukraine shrank by 27 percent year-on-year in August 2026, with consumers purchasing just 5,000 new vehicles during the month, according to data released by the Ukravtoprom automotive association.

The monthly sales total also represented a 14 percent drop compared to July 2026, marking a continued contraction in vehicle demand across the country. Total new passenger car registrations since the beginning of the year reached over 43,700 units, reflecting a 5 percent decline compared to the same eight-month period in 2025.

Japanese automaker Toyota remained the undisputed sales leader in the Ukrainian vehicle market, expanding its monthly sales volume by 9 percent. Czech manufacturer Skoda took second place after recording a 47 percent increase in sales, while Japanese producer Mazda also achieved positive sales growth. They were the only three brands among the top ten sellers to report expanded sales figures for the month.

The Toyota RAV4 crossover retained its position as Ukraine's best-selling new car model in August 2026, holding onto the top ranking it secured in the previous month.

By contrast, all other vehicle brands within the domestic top ten experienced declining sales volumes. Major automotive manufacturers, including French brand Renault, Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD, South Korean manufacturer Hyundai, and Germany's Volkswagen, saw their sales performance in Ukraine deteriorate significantly.

Domestic automotive market context

Ukravtoprom, formally known as the Association of Ukrainian Motor Vehicle Manufacturers, is the principal industry group monitoring auto registrations, domestic vehicle assembly, and motor trade trends in Ukraine. The national passenger car market acts as a major indicator of consumer sentiment and retail expenditure within the Ukrainian economy.

Toyota Motor Corporation, headquartered in Toyota City, Japan, is one of the world's largest automotive manufacturers, producing a wide line of passenger vehicles, crossovers, and commercial transportation. Its RAV4 compact crossover model was first introduced in 1994 and has long served as a flagship product in global auto markets.

Skoda Auto, founded in 1895 and based in Mlada Boleslav, Czech Republic, operates as a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. The brand maintains a longstanding commercial presence across Central and Eastern Europe, where compact passenger cars and utility vehicles remain popular choices for private and corporate buyers.

Global sales trends for Toyota

Toyota's sales growth in Ukraine contrasted with its recent performance on the international stage, where global sales for the Japanese carmaker have fallen for six consecutive months.

Worldwide vehicle sales for Toyota Motor Corporation, alongside its compact car subsidiary Daihatsu Motor Company, fell by 5.3 percent in July 2026 compared to July 2025, totaling 912,683 vehicles. Based on those figures, Ukraine accounted for approximately 0.1 percent of Toyota's total global sales volume.

Daihatsu Motor Company, headquartered in Ikeda, Osaka Prefecture, operates as a Toyota subsidiary specializing in small passenger cars and subcompact commercial vehicles. Meanwhile, global competitors such as Shenzhen-based electric vehicle maker BYD Company, Seoul-headquartered Hyundai Motor Company, and Wolfsburg-based Volkswagen AG continue to adjust their production schedules as consumer demand shifts across major international markets.
