Ukraine has tested a new tactic that combines heavy drones with armed ground robots, according to footage circulated by a Russian military channel. A heavy drone carries a small ground robot near a target, sets it down, and withdraws, after which the robot continues on the ground carrying explosives so that soldiers do not need to approach the area.
The footage shows a large Ukrainian hexacopter carrying an ARK-1 platform beneath its frame. The exact date and location have not been made public, and Ukrainian authorities have not officially confirmed the operation. If verified, it would be the first known combat use of a ground robot deployed directly from another drone.
A drone that skips the most dangerous stretch
Small ground vehicles can carry ammunition, food or medical supplies, but they struggle with obstacles, ditches and monitored areas. Carrying them under a heavy drone lets them clear those barriers and be set down much closer to their destination. The aircraft also does not need to fly all the way to the enemy position, which reduces its exposure.
The platform seen in the footage is believed to be an ARK-1, a compact robot with four-wheel drive that can reach about 45 kilometers per hour. In this mission it is reported to have carried anti-tank mines to continue on its own after landing. It is not clear whether it reached its target or what the outcome of the attack was.
Part of a wider pattern
The tactic resembles "mothership" platforms, in which one vehicle carries another to extend its range. Ukraine already uses large drones that release small FPV drones near the front line, along with ground robots capable of launching aircraft. It has also carried out an operation in which an uncrewed vessel dropped off an armed robot on the Kinburn Peninsula.
The approach fits with other developments, such as Ukrainian $400 drones equipped with artificial intelligence to track targets without a pilot. The shared goal is to reduce dependence on a constant connection and keep operators away from danger.
From demonstrations to the battlefield
The United States tested similar concepts starting in the early 2000s, but many remained demonstrations. Ukraine is now moving them onto the battlefield using cheap equipment adapted quickly to front-line needs. That does not yet make these robots substitutes for infantry, since they have less autonomy, weaker awareness of their surroundings, and are vulnerable to malfunctions and attacks.
Even so, they can open routes, scout positions or wear down defenses before soldiers arrive. Ukraine is also preparing an electric drone approaching 700 km/h to intercept kamikaze aircraft, showing that drone development remains active on the battlefield. The next step could be an initial wave made almost entirely of machines, with troops moving in afterward to secure the ground.
