Ukraine attacks Russian Perm region 1500 km from border

Ukrainian drone strikes have targeted the Perm region deep within Russian territory, striking an area approximately 1,500 kilometres from the Ukrainian border. Air defence systems are currently working to repel the attack, according to regional security officials.

The regional ministry of territorial security reported the ongoing drone assault. The ministry stated that anti-aircraft forces were engaging the targets but provided no further details regarding potential casualties or damage to infrastructure on the ground, according to the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti.

The Perm region, formally known as Perm Krai, is situated in the eastern part of European Russia near the Ural Mountains. The region serves as a major industrial and manufacturing hub for the country. It is home to significant oil and gas processing facilities, chemical plants and factories producing equipment for the Russian defence sector.

The 1,500-kilometre distance from the Ukrainian frontier underscores the increasing operational range of the unmanned aerial vehicles being deployed by Kyiv. The ability to strike targets so far from the frontline demonstrates a sustained effort to bring the conflict deeper into Russian airspace.

Attacks on Penza region

The drone assault on the Perm region follows an earlier incident in the Penza region, where local air defence units were also forced to intercept unmanned aerial vehicles. The Penza region is located hundreds of kilometres southeast of Moscow, further highlighting the widespread nature of the drone incursions.

The governor of the Penza region, Oleg Melnichenko, stated that air defences had successfully engaged the incoming threats. He said that two of the drones were destroyed in the airspace over a rural district within the region, while a third was intercepted near the boundary of the regional capital.

Ukraine has steadily expanded its campaign of long-range drone strikes against strategic targets deep inside the Russian Federation. These operations frequently focus on military airfields, ammunition depots, oil refineries and fuel storage sites. Ukrainian authorities have previously indicated that these strikes are intended to disrupt the military logistics and supply chains that support Russian forces.
