Venezuela has 260 political prisoners, according to the NGO Foro Penal

The Venezuelan NGO Foro Penal denounced that in the country there are 260 detained citizens whom they consider political prisoners, one less than in its report last week.

“On October 14, 260 political prisoners in Venezuela, according to the updated list of the Penal Forum,” said the director-president of the NGO, Alfredo Romero, through his Twitter account.

He explained that, by gender, of the 260 political prisoners, 245 are men and 15 are women, while, by occupation, 133 are military and 127 are civilians.

In addition, among the 260 detained for political reasons, according to the NGO, there is a teenager.

The Penal Forum recalled that since 2014 it has registered 15,747 arrests for political reasons and has assisted more than 12,000 citizens, already released today.

As he pointed out, more than 9,000 people still face measures restricting their freedom.

On September 6, the NGO reported that 42 of the 262 citizens considered political prisoners in the country up to that moment were “in a critical health situation.”

“We want to warn you as we have done on various occasions prior to the death of people: there are serious situations in the health of very important political prisoners at this time,” Romero said then.

His health reports detailed muscle problems, severe fractures, hernias, and high blood pressure.

The NGO also reported last Tuesday that in the country ten “political prisoners” have died in State custody since 2014, information that it offered after the death of former Defense Minister Raúl Isaías Baduel, who, according to the Prosecutor’s Office, died of a cardiorespiratory arrest due to COVID-19.

The official version of Baduel’s death is questioned by the family and various national and international human rights organizations.
