Estrela Amadora beats Marítimo on penalties, returns to the Portuguese 1st Division and relegates opponent

Estrela Amadora faced Marítimo again this Sunday, for the return game of the playoffs final, and returned to the First Division of the Portuguese Championship. The team lost 2-1 and, after 3-3 on aggregate, won the penalty shootout.

Midfielder Xadas opened the scoring for Marítimo, in the 18th minute of the first half. At 26, however, Miguel Lopes tied the count. Jesus Andres Ramirez Diaz put the Marítimo team back in front in stoppage time in the second half.

In overtime, nothing changed and the score remained the same: 2 to 1. In the maximum penalties, Estrela was superior and rose to the elite by 3 to 2.

Marítimo ended the season in 16th place, with 26 points, the first member within the relegation zone. The placement gave the team the chance to play, in home and away games, the playoffs against the third-placed player in the Second Division, Estrela Amadora, who ended the tournament with 63 units.

The team could not avoid a descent, 38 years later, to Liga II. The last time had been in the period 1984/85.

The other relegated teams were Paços de Ferreira and Santa Clara. On the other hand, who went up were champions Moreirense and Farense.
