SYRIZA Targets Alexis Tsipras in New Debt Campaign Spot

Greek opposition party SYRIZA has released a campaign video spot focusing on private debt while launching indirect criticism against former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

The party headquarters at Koumoundourou released the broadcast on September 3, 2026, as the second installment in a series of approximately 20 television spots designed for its ongoing political campaign.

According to party officials, the campaign directly addresses core socioeconomic challenges in Greece by prioritizing private debt reform. Earlier in the week, SYRIZA submitted a comprehensive bill to the Greek parliament aiming to restructure the national debt market.

At the center of the legislative proposal is a mechanism that utilizes the Hellenic Development Bank to absorb a significant portion of state guarantees previously allocated to investment funds and loan servicing companies.

Under the proposed law, the state owned institution would participate in a public mechanism to acquire all non-performing loans, commonly known as red loans, at the exact purchase prices paid by private funds. The bank would then manage these loans under restructured terms that borrowers can afford to repay.

SYRIZA leadership rejected the current market conditions under Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, describing the environment surrounding non-performing loans as arbitrary and harmful to citizens.

Opposition to private debt funds

Party representatives stated that investment funds frequently purchase distressed loans from affiliated banks at 10 percent to 20 percent of their face value. These entities then demand repayments from workers, self-employed professionals, farmers, small business owners, and pensioners that exceed the original debt principal by up to 100 percent.

SYRIZA officials argued that the new legislation would remove speculative debt servicers and foreign funds from the Greek market. By converting state guarantees into protective social capital, the party stated that the measure would safeguard citizens who supported the financial system through forced borrowing conditions during economic crisis years.

Political tensions with Alexis Tsipras

The party choice to include sharp implicit criticisms regarding the position of other progressive political forces coincides with recent activity by former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. The video follows the presentation of an alternative economic program delivered by Tsipras just one day prior, on September 2, 2026.

Framing its platform under a central slogan emphasizing a liberating Left, Koumoundourou declared that SYRIZA takes a firm stand when other political figures remain silent. Party officials indicated that SYRIZA plans to escalate its political rhetoric and campaign efforts in the coming week.

Background on Greek debt crisis measures

SYRIZA, officially known as the Coalition of the Radical Left, served as Greece's governing party from 2015 to 2019 under Tsipras. The term Koumoundourou refers to the party's central headquarters on Koumoundourou Square in Athens. The handling of non-performing loans, or red loans, has remained a central political debate in Greece following years of financial bailouts and banking sector restructurings.

The Hellenic Development Bank is Greece's primary state-owned development finance institution, established to support economic growth and small businesses. In recent years, Greek banks transferred billions of euros in non-performing loans to international private equity funds and licensed debt servicing companies under state-backed guarantee frameworks.

Parliamentary discussions on SYRIZA's legislative proposal are expected to continue as political parties gear up for upcoming legislative debates and public presentations.
