Syrian president al-Sharaa names Mazloum Abdi as advisor

Syrian President Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa has appointed Kurdish leader Mazloum Abdi as a presidential advisor to seal a new political reality in Damascus.

The appointment of the Kurdish official was formalized through a presidential decree signed by Sharaa and broadcast by Syria's state news agency, SANA. The text of the decision stated that Mustafa Khalil Abdi is appointed advisor to the Presidency of the Republic.

The high-level political move comes just days after Abdi announced the dissolution of the Syrian Democratic Forces, implementing an integration agreement signed with Damascus.

Abdi, the former commander of the Kurdish-led SDF, declared on Tuesday that the force had ended its operation as an independent military entity.

Integration of Kurdish institutions

Syrian officials described the decision as the most pivotal step in a broader roadmap for the assimilation of Kurdish institutions into the state apparatus.

The agreement was reached earlier this year between Kurdish representatives and the Islamist government based in the Syrian capital of Damascus.

The Syrian Democratic Forces were established as a multi-ethnic military coalition dominated by Kurdish fighters. The group controlled territory across northern and eastern Syria, operating its own civil administration and security apparatus.

Mazloum Abdi, who is also named in official decrees as Mustafa Khalil Abdi, emerged as the primary military leader representing Syrian Kurdish authorities during years of regional negotiation.

The political transition marks a major shift in Syrian governance, bringing previously autonomous regional structures under central presidential authority in Damascus.
