Sugarcane extract rich in natural polyphenols can lower bad cholesterol and other blood fats that elevate the risk of cardiovascular disease, according to Australian researchers.

The clinical trial, published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition, monitored 47 healthy volunteers aged between 18 and 55 over a six month period. Participants received 500 milligrams of sugarcane extract daily or a placebo before swapping groups to evaluate individual responses and minimize baseline differences.

Blood analysis showed that daily consumption of the extract led to significant reductions in very low density lipoproteins, triglycerides, and trans fats compared with the placebo. Health experts consider these blood lipids to be key risk factors in the development of atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes.

Very low density lipoproteins, commonly referred to as VLDL, are synthesized in the liver to transport triglycerides throughout the body. When levels of VLDL and trans fats remain elevated in the bloodstream, fatty deposits can accumulate along arterial walls, restricting blood flow over time.

Gut Microflora and Metabolic Health

The research team also identified distinct changes in gut microflora activity among participants taking the extract, suggesting potential metabolic improvements linked to intestinal bacteria. However, the supplement produced no noticeable changes in body weight, blood sugar levels, or inflammatory markers.

The human gut microbiome comprises trillions of microorganisms that assist in digestion, nutrient absorption, and metabolic regulation. Modern clinical research increasingly examines how polyphenols found in plants interact with intestinal flora to influence lipid processing and systemic metabolic health.

Preventive Potential for Heart Health

The study authors stressed that the extract is not currently intended as a replacement for standard cholesterol lowering medications. They noted that sugarcane polyphenols positively affect lipid metabolism and may serve in the future as a complementary preventative measure against cardiovascular conditions.

The investigation adds to ongoing research into natural preventive strategies for heart health, following earlier findings that Mediterranean diets and regular physical activity significantly improve cardiovascular outcomes. Frontiers in Nutrition is a peer reviewed scientific journal covering human nutrition, dietary interventions, and clinical health outcomes.
