Filmmaker Steven Spielberg will oversee all creative aspects of the eighth live-action Transformers film for Paramount Pictures.
Spielberg will maintain his role as executive producer on the project while collaborating closely with longtime franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, according to reporting by Variety. The creative team has set a goal to return the franchise to the tone of the initial films in the series.

Creative direction and potential director
The director for the eighth installment has not yet been named publicly. It also remains unclear what role longtime Transformers director Michael Bay might take on the new project.
According to Deadline, the director originally proposed by Spielberg for the first film has already read the script. That filmmaker held a private meeting with Spielberg a few days ago and is reportedly open to directing the series once again.
Screenwriter Jason Fuchs has written the script for the eighth film, which will be set in the present day.
Cast updates and studio leadership
Former franchise star Shia LaBeouf will not return for the upcoming movie. Discussions regarding the remainder of the cast remain in their very early stages.
The agreement securing Spielberg's expanded creative role across the franchise was finalized during preliminary talks in August between Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein. Goldberg and Greenstein assumed leadership of Paramount Pictures following the studio's merger with Skydance.
The live-action Transformers franchise has generated more than 5.4 billion dollars in worldwide box office receipts since its debut. Alongside di Bonaventura, the production team for the eighth film includes Mark Vahradian, Don Murphy, Tom DeSanto, and Hasbro Entertainment.
Theatrical re-release and franchise legacy
The development of the eighth film follows the theatrical re-release of the animated feature The Transformers: The Movie in September. The film had its screening schedule extended in American cinemas following strong box office performance.
The Transformers media franchise began as a line of transforming robot toys produced by Hasbro before expanding into television, comic books, and feature films. Spielberg served as executive producer when Paramount launched the live-action movie series in 2007, with Bay directing and LaBeouf starring in the initial trilogy.
