Geophysicist Stefan Burns has warned that Earth faces a potential four-year surge in major volcanic eruptions across the United States, Europe, and Asia.
Burns claims the shift from peak solar energy to a quiet solar minimum between 2026 and 2030 is driving increased volcanic unrest, putting millions of people living in active hazard zones at risk.
Speaking during an August 15 livestream on his YouTube channel, which examines natural disasters, Burns highlighted roughly a dozen major volcanic systems in heavily populated regions showing heightened activity.
He expressed concern about the transition, stating: "There is a clear pattern here that, to me, is a little troubling."

Burns explained that historical records indicate a statistically significant rise in global volcanism following the solar maximum loading phase. "When you take into context the fact that as you go from solar maximum to solar minimum, there is a statistically significant increase in global volcanism," he said. He added: "It's not like volcanism increases 10x or something, but the records that we do have of large volcanic eruptions show that with the solar cycle, you have more activity during that solar minimum, which is after you had that big loading phase."
Solar Cycle and Underground Electrical Currents
The sun operates on an 11-year solar cycle, alternating between solar maximum, a peak phase that showers Earth with energy and radiation, and solar minimum, when activity reaches its lowest point. NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, noted that the sun has been moving toward a solar minimum since October 2024, with the peak low point expected around 2030.
According to Burns, peak solar energy charges Earth's upper atmosphere, generating electrical currents deep underground that interact with the planet's magnetic field. He claims these shifts can fuel volcanic unrest, earthquakes, and major hurricanes.
Burns has broken with mainstream geologists by linking space weather events such as solar storms, solar flares, sunspots, and eclipses to underground seismic activity. "When I put all the pieces together, it becomes fairly compelling," he said.

The online earthquake commentator has made several accurate predictions this year, forecasting major seismic events in Colombia, Peru, and Indonesia days before they occurred. Using solar activity data, seismic wave trends, and magnetic field shifts, Burns warned of a magnitude 7.4 earthquake in San Jose Del Palmar, Colombia, two months before it struck.
He emphasized the role of synchronicity, meaningful coincidences that align without an obvious physical connection, which he argues traditional scientists often overlook when examining seismic events.
Cascade Range and US Volcanic Danger Zones
In the United States, Burns pointed to ongoing volcanic activity at Hawaii's Kīlauea volcano and warned of potential new eruptions along the Cascade Range in Washington and Oregon.
The Cascade Range is a major volcanic arc in the Pacific Northwest, home to active stratovolcanoes including Mount Rainier, Mount St Helens, and Mount Hood. Mount St Helens previously suffered a catastrophic eruption in 1980, while scientists warn that a major eruption at Mount Rainier could send massive volcanic mudflows down toward nearby communities within minutes.

Burns also highlighted Kamaʻehuakanaloa, an underwater volcano located 20 miles off the coast of Hawaii. "This is one of the largest hotspots and volcanoes on the planet. So, what happens here is very much a glimpse into the deep earth," Burns said.
He cited a series of rare simultaneous events near Hawaii's Big Island in mid-August as evidence of Earth's interconnected systems, including the formation of Hurricane Lala and a record-setting earthquake beneath Kamaʻehuakanaloa during a solar eclipse.
Ring of Fire Seismic Chain Reaction
Burns believes recent global unrest along the Pacific Ring of Fire was triggered by a massive magnitude 8.8 megaquake that struck near Kamchatka, Russia, on July 29, 2025.
The Pacific Ring of Fire is a 25,000-mile arc surrounding the Pacific Ocean, stretching from South America up through the US West Coast and across to Asia. It contains roughly 75 percent of the world's active volcanoes.

The 2025 Russian megaquake triggered active eruptions at two Russian volcanoes, Cresenico and Shivaluch. Burns explained that stress from the megaquake rippled across the Pacific Plate like waves on a pond, setting off nearby fault lines and generating multiple magnitude 7 earthquakes, dozens of magnitude 6 quakes, and hundreds of smaller tremors.
Seismic intensity has remained high throughout the region. More than a dozen major earthquakes have struck the western side of the Ring of Fire since July 2025. In August 2026 alone, sensors recorded more than 180 significant earthquakes exceeding magnitude 4.5 in locations including Indonesia, Japan, Alaska, Mexico, and South America.
Burns stated that the Ring of Fire will eventually need to balance itself by releasing built-up energy along the West Coast of the United States and South America.
Supervolcanoes and Fireball Observations
Burns highlighted several other major volcanic hotspots that have shown signs of activation, including Italy's Mount Etna and the Gakkel supervolcano in the Arctic Ocean near Iceland.
He also expressed concern over supervolcanoes in heavily populated areas, including the Campi Flegrei supervolcano in Italy and the Toba supervolcano in Indonesia.
On August 15, 2026, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck near Lake Toba in Indonesia. Toba last erupted approximately 74,000 years ago in one of the largest volcanic events on Earth in the past two million years, which scientists believe caused a severe decline in early human populations.
"I'm not saying that this 6.9 is going to trigger the Toba supervolcano, but it's another geo event that struck close to a volcano, and it's significant," Burns noted.
In the Pacific Northwest, Burns tied the volcanic unrest to an atmospheric event on August 14, 2026, when a giant fireball believed to be a meteor passed over the Cascadia volcanoes. Monitoring sensors on the volcanoes recorded low-frequency blast waves caused by the object.
Burns is not the only researcher to link solar cycles and major quakes to volcanic activity. In 1989, NASA scientist R.B. Stothers identified statistically noticeable 11-year and 80-year cycles matching solar activity, with slightly more eruptions occurring during solar minimums. Additionally, a 2017 study by Takeshi Nishimura of Tohoku University in Japan found that when a magnitude 7.5 or greater earthquake occurs within 125 miles of a volcano, the likelihood of a new eruption increases by approximately 50 percent over the following five years.
