Angers returns to the elite of French football after season in the second division

A year after being relegated to the second division, Angers sealed their return to the elite of French footballthis Friday, after drawing 0-0 with Dunkerque in the 37th and final round of Ligue 2.

Angers finished in second place (68 points) and secured access along with Auxerre (74 points), classified since last week and who this Friday celebrated the second division title with a 4-1 victory over Concarneau at the Abbé-Deschamps stadium.

Third place was the traditional Saint-Étienne (65 points), which was defeated by Quevilly-Rouen 2-1. Saint-Étienne, Rodez and Paris FC still have a chance of moving up, but to do so they will have to go through a playoff.

Angers lived through a nightmare last season, finishing bottom of Ligue 1 with 28 defeats in 38 games.

The Ligue 2 campaign did not start well for Angers, who had to wait until the fourth round to get their first victory. From then on, the team began to compete for the top positions, with six wins in the next seven games, leading the championship in the middle of the season.
