A shade-finding mobile application has been launched in South Korea during an abnormal heatwave, according to the Telegram channel Pod'yem. The app, Geuneullo: Summer Routes for Walkers, reached first place in the Navigation section of the App Store.
Minjun Yoo, a 23-year-old student at Seoul National University, developed the program. The service analyzes the sun position alongside shadows from buildings and trees to construct the coolest walking route. It also allows users to check which side of a bus stays out of the sun and how to select the coolest location on the subway.
Record temperatures in South Korea
Extreme heat has swept the region in recent days. In Yangsae, located in southeastern South Korea, temperatures reached a record high of 42.5 degrees Celsius on August 2. That mark is the highest temperature recorded there since weather tracking began in 1904. Temperatures in Seoul climbed to 38 degrees Celsius on August 4.
Unusually hot weather was also reported elsewhere on Friday, August 7, as temperatures in Moscow Oblast hit 33 degrees Celsius.
