Sony has shared new details on the inner workings of its Enhanced PSSR technology for the PlayStation 5 Pro during a presentation at the SIGGRAPH graphics conference. The tech giant revealed that the updated upscaling system runs more efficiently than its predecessor and delivers significant image quality improvements, particularly at lower input resolutions.

Under the revised structure, Sony allocated roughly 90 percent of the model parameters in Enhanced PSSR to resolutions of 540p and lower. By comparison, the previous iteration of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution assigned only about 30 percent of its parameters to that lower resolution bracket.
The system introduces a new Kernel Predicting Network that generates blend weights rather than attempting to directly predict final pixel color. Sony explained that this design avoids predicting and combining High Dynamic Range colors in an 8-bit format, which reduces the computational resources needed during HDR image processing.
Efficiency gains and hardware performance
Sony said the new architectural design delivers sharper visual details and greater image stability while lowering overall memory usage and GPU processing time. The company also streamlined the development process, cutting the model's required training time from approximately four GPU weeks down to less than one GPU week.
While image quality improves across all input resolutions, Sony noted that the largest performance gains are achieved at lower base resolutions. The enhanced upscaling allows games rendering at lower native pixel counts to output clearer, more stable visuals on display screens.
Game integration and system overrides
Another key feature of Enhanced PSSR is its flexibility in implementation across software libraries. Sony stated that certain existing PS5 Pro titles will be able to utilize the updated technology through a system-level override method, removing the requirement for developers to release individual game patches.
Game developers will also have the option to integrate the new PSSR framework directly into their software projects. The technology forms a central part of Sony's hardware strategy for the PS5 Pro, its flagship home video game console designed to deliver higher frame rates and enhanced visual performance.
