A photography exhibition celebrating migratory birds visiting the Dominican Republic opens on Saturday, September 5, at the Museum of Natural History in Santo Domingo.
The showcase, titled "Volver. Alas del Caribe, un puente natural" (Return: Caribbean Wings, a Natural Bridge), will be inaugurated at 10:00 a.m. as part of the Photoimagen 2026 festival.
Organized by the photography collective Fotoguardianes de la Naturaleza under the coordination of Dominican photographer Pedro Genaro, the exhibition focuses on the migratory species that arrive in the country and their importance to the ecological balance of the region.
The initiative aims to bring the public closer to these birds through photography while promoting greater awareness of the shared natural spaces they rely on during their seasonal journeys. Genaro explained that revealing the world of these species represents the photo group's contribution to environmental education, ecotourism, and the conservation of shared habitats.
The Dominican Republic serves as a vital stopover and wintering ground for dozens of migratory bird species traveling along the Atlantic Flyway. Every autumn, millions of songbirds, shorebirds, and birds of prey migrate between North America and South America, relying on the coastal wetlands, mangrove swamps, and tropical forests of the Caribbean for food and shelter.
Environmental Awareness and Civic Engagement
The exhibition presents photography as a medium to illustrate the relationship between migratory birds and the fragile ecosystems they navigate. Fotoguardianes de la Naturaleza emphasized that art and education are essential tools for building public consciousness around the protection of natural heritage.
The collective stated that these visual resources help inform political decision-makers while empowering current citizens and future generations to safeguard natural habitats. The proposal directly links public outreach on migratory species with the growth of environmental education and local ecotourism.
Pedro Genaro is a Dominican nature photographer and conservation advocate known for capturing wildlife across Hispaniola. Through Fotoguardianes de la Naturaleza, photographers combine art and environmental science to document regional biodiversity and support habitat preservation campaigns.

The exhibition forms part of the official program for Photoimagen 2026, which features 20 exhibitions and 19 parallel activities scheduled throughout the festival.
