Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to Return to United Kingdom

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are moving back to the United Kingdom, where their children Archie and Lilibet will start school in September.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to Return to United Kingdom

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle plan to return to live in the United Kingdom by the end of August 2026, six years after leaving for the United States.

According to The Telegraph, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will move into a private, non-royal residence located outside of London. Their children, Archie and Lilibet, are already enrolled in a British educational institution to start the school year in September, signalling a permanent return to the country.

King Charles III, Prince William, and Kate Middleton were informed of the move several days ago, according to The Guardian, though none of them have publicly commented on the decision. The return comes after years of public criticism directed at the British monarchy by the couple, who remain unpopular in the United Kingdom.

Departure background and royal titles

The couple initially announced their departure for California in early 2020 through a concise statement. In a 2021 television interview with Oprah Winfrey, the Duke and Duchess listed the omnipresence of paparazzi, a lack of security, and issues of racism as their reasons for stepping away from royal duties.

Maud Garmy, a royal reporter and specialist on the Windsor family for Point de Vue magazine, said that this return appears very surprising given the couple's past statements. Garmy noted that while those difficulties remain, the couple could gain other benefits from returning to England.

By educating Archie and Lilibet in the United Kingdom, Harry and Meghan can reinforce that their children hold the titles of prince and princess, status that had become less clear during their years in the United States. Garmy added that the move allows the family to reclaim their place within the royal family tree after years of distance.

Royal duties and public roles

British media outlets reported unanimously that Harry and Meghan will not reside in any royal property. Having resigned from their official duties six years ago and relinquished their Her Royal Highness and His Royal Highness titles, there is little likelihood of the couple returning to front-line royal roles.

Garmy explained that active members of the royal family are clearly defined and that Harry and Meghan are no longer part of that group. While they will not carry out official engagements on behalf of the crown, they are expected to appear frequently for charitable activities.

According to The Telegraph, King Charles clarified that the couple's status as non-working family members and private individuals will remain unchanged, matching their previously expressed wishes. Garmy noted that while the Sussexes will not stand on the Buckingham Palace balcony for official state events, they could be invited to private family gatherings.

Prospects for royal family reconciliation

Private family occasions could include Christmas at Sandringham, Easter at Windsor, or summer stays at Balmoral. Garmy said these extended family gatherings will raise the question between King Charles and Prince William of whether the presence of the Sussexes will be tolerated.

Garmy stated that Prince William still holds resentment toward his brother and has not yet forgiven him, making a personal reconciliation difficult. In contrast, Garmy noted that King Charles does not want to be remembered as a father who permanently excluded one of his sons, making a family reconciliation important to both Charles and Harry.

With the 30th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana approaching, the two brothers could find an opportunity to rebuild their relationship. Garmy pointed out that one of the last times the brothers appeared together was to unveil their mother's statue in Kensington Gardens, calling it the final remaining bond between them.
