Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are preparing to return to Britain after multi-million dollar media deals with Netflix and Spotify collapsed.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Media Deals Collapse

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are preparing to return to Britain after their multi-million dollar streaming contracts in California expired or were reduced.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved to California in 2020 following their departure from the British royal family, seeking financial independence through major media partnerships. Their initial ventures included a reported 100 million dollar deal with Netflix for fictional series, documentaries, and children's programming, alongside a 20 million dollar podcast deal with Spotify.

Six years after relocating to North America, the couple's media enterprise has faced significant contraction. The Guardian described their six-year path as a clear example of the challenges within the modern attention economy, noting that high-profile backgrounds provide no guarantee of commercial success.

Royal family content and streaming performance

Industry analysis indicates that content focusing on the royal family remains the couple's most successful topic. Their 2022 Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, which detailed their rift with the House of Windsor, broke premiere records for documentaries on the platform and became one of its most-viewed productions in that genre.

Projects unlinked to royal drama achieved substantially smaller audiences. Harry's polo documentary Polo failed to enter Netflix's global Top 10 list. The second season of Meghan's lifestyle show With Love, Meghan placed 1,217th among platform titles during the second half of last year, while a planned children's animated series named Pearl was cancelled entirely.

Netflix also ended its seven-month partnership with Meghan's lifestyle brand As Ever. Although the streaming company maintains an ongoing relationship with the couple, it has been scaled down to a limited first-look agreement that grants Netflix initial refusal on new projects developed by their production company, Archewell.

Spotify partnership and podcasting attempts

The couple's venture with Spotify concluded by mutual agreement in 2023 after producing only 12 episodes of Meghan's podcast Archetypes, which featured guests including tennis player Serena Williams and singer Mariah Carey. Following the termination, senior Spotify executive Bill Simmons publicly criticized the couple using disparaging language during a broadcast.

Meghan made a second attempt at podcasting in 2025 by releasing Confessions of a Female Founder through Lemonada Media. The show ended after nine episodes when Meghan announced there would be no second season so she could concentrate on her brand As Ever.

Industry analysts state that the reduction in major deals reflects a broader shift across streaming platforms, which have scaled back expensive talent contracts while adapting to changes in the creator economy.

Industry commentary and media strategy

Media industry experts observe that public curiosity about the couple remains high, but converting attention into repeatable viewership presents a major challenge. Social media consultant Matt Navarra explained that while the couple can generate widespread attention on demand, turning that interest into a recurring media product is far more difficult. Navarra stated that fame can purchase an initial click, but sustained content is required to win subsequent views.

Creator economy analyst Evan Shapiro noted that the era of relying solely on celebrity status to secure an audience has ended. Shapiro explained that Meghan left her acting career during an earlier media era dominated by top-down production models, whereas current platforms compete against billions of mobile phone users producing independent content.

The Guardian highlighted that the Sussexes are not unique in experiencing scaled-back media deals. Former United States President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama saw their Higher Ground production company transition from a broad Netflix deal to a limited first-look contract in 2024, while their Spotify partnership ended in 2022.

Navarra added that public curiosity about an individual does not automatically translate into demand for every product they produce, emphasizing that celebrity serves as a distribution advantage rather than a comprehensive content strategy.

Return to acting and future projects

Reports indicate that Meghan is considering a return to acting, the profession she paused prior to her marriage. Speculation intensified following her appearance as a guest judge on MasterChef Australia, alongside reports of discussions to join the third season of director Guy Ritchie's Netflix series The Gentlemen. Representatives close to the couple have not issued denials regarding these reports.

Archewell is continuing development on several media projects, including a drama centered on polo and a film adaptation of the romantic novel Meet Me at the Lake. Sources familiar with company operations report that additional projects outside Netflix are also under consideration.

Prince Harry's return to the United Kingdom

Harry's decision to spend more time in Britain follows previous public statements expressing affection for his home country. In an interview with The Guardian, Harry stated that he has always loved the United Kingdom and valued reconnecting with local charitable causes and longstanding acquaintances, noting the difficulty of maintaining those relationships from abroad.

The health of his father, King Charles, has further driven Harry's desire to rebuild ties in Britain. On a professional level, Harry is focusing on the upcoming Invictus Games scheduled to take place in Birmingham next year. His published memoir Spare remains his most successful single media release to date.

Relocating focus to Britain does not restrict the couple's production capacity, as the United Kingdom remains a major global film and television production hub. Six years after establishing their base in California with plans for a global media empire, Harry and Meghan maintain significant publicity reach while continuing to refine their long-term content strategy.
