A NATO EA-37B electronic warfare aircraft flying in Polish airspace near Kaliningrad was studying the electromagnetic signatures of Russian air defence systems, according to a report by Military Watch Magazine.

The military aviation publication reported that the aircraft was conducting a mission to locate vulnerabilities in Russia's integrated air defence networks by mapping electronic signals in the border region.
According to Military Watch Magazine, the EA-37B aircraft system carries particular strategic importance in large-scale military conflicts because modern defense operations rely heavily on electromagnetic communications. Air defence networks depend on radio and digital channels to transmit real-time data between radar installations, command posts and surface-to-air missile batteries, while ground units rely on similar networks to coordinate troop maneuvers and direct artillery fire support.
Targeting Air Defence Networks
The publication noted that disrupting communications between these interconnected systems during wartime produces severe operational consequences. It stated that the primary objective of the EA-37B is to identify weaknesses in Russian air defences, including through potential attacks against the networks that enable integrated air defence systems to operate effectively.
The Gulfstream EA-37B Compass Call II is a specialized wide-area electronic attack aircraft operated by the United States Air Force to disrupt enemy command and control communications, radars and navigation systems. By conducting operations within Polish airspace near the border, the aircraft was able to collect signal intelligence while remaining inside NATO territory.
Multiple Reconnaissance Flights
The findings follow earlier reports from Russian state news agency TASS, which cited a source in European Union air traffic control services stating that three NATO reconnaissance aircraft were detected operating near Kaliningrad Oblast within a two-hour window.
The aircraft identified in that timeframe included a Bombardier ARTEMIS II intelligence-gathering plane, a Boeing E-3A Sentry airborne warning and control system aircraft, and the Gulfstream EA-37B Compass Call II electronic attack platform.
Russian war correspondent Yevgeny Poddubny also reported the surveillance flights on his Telegram channel, noting that heightened air force activity by the North Atlantic Alliance had been observed around the Kaliningrad region.
Strategic Importance of Kaliningrad
Kaliningrad Oblast is a heavily fortified Russian exclave situated on the Baltic coast, geographically separated from the rest of Russia and bordered by NATO member states Poland and Lithuania. Home to key military facilities including the headquarters of Russia's Baltic Fleet, the region sees regular monitoring of its radar emissions and air defence networks by NATO reconnaissance flights operating in international and allied airspace.
