A decline in muscle mass and strength, particularly when paired with obesity, can significantly increase the risk of developing hypertension, according to a major scientific study published in Frontiers in Nutrition.

Researchers reached the conclusion after conducting a meta-analysis that synthesized data from nine separate studies involving nearly 347,000 participants.

The analysis revealed that individuals suffering from sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass and physical strength, face a 45 percent higher probability of high blood pressure compared to those without the condition. When sarcopenia is combined with obesity, the risk of developing elevated blood pressure increases nearly 2.5 times.

Metabolic impact of muscle loss

The authors of the study explained that skeletal muscle tissue plays a critical role in metabolic health, insulin sensitivity, and the regulation of inflammatory processes in the body. When muscle tissue decreases, particularly against the background of excess fat tissue, these essential metabolic functions can become impaired, contributing to the development of hypertension.

Skeletal muscle serves as the primary site for glucose storage and disposal in the human body. When muscle mass declines, insulin sensitivity often decreases, leading to elevated blood sugar levels and potential vascular stiffness over time. In addition, excess body fat promotes systemic inflammation, which can further alter blood vessel function and restrict blood flow throughout the circulatory system.

Sarcopenia is a progressive medical condition commonly seen in older adults, characterized by a steady loss of skeletal muscle volume and muscle force. Hypertension, or chronically high blood pressure, occurs when the long-term force of blood against blood vessel walls is high enough to eventually cause health problems, such as cardiovascular disease.

Study limitations and earlier research

The authors emphasized that their work identified a statistical association between reduced muscle mass, obesity, and high blood pressure, rather than proving a direct cause-and-effect relationship. They noted that observational meta-analyses analyze existing patterns across multiple population groups, leaving open the question of whether muscle loss directly triggers hypertension or shares underlying physiological triggers.

The meta-analysis was published in Frontiers in Nutrition, a peer-reviewed scientific journal that publishes research on human nutrition, clinical dietetics, and metabolic health.

The findings build on ongoing medical research into lifestyle and dietary factors that influence blood pressure regulation. Previously, scientists discovered that regular tea consumption may also help reduce the risk of developing hypertension.
