Greek singer Miltos Paschalidis paid tribute to Giorgos Mazonakis at a recent concert, performing one of the late artist's best-known songs, "Aniko Se Mena" ("I Belong to Myself"), on acoustic guitar as the audience sang along.
In videos of the performance posted to TikTok, Paschalidis could be heard saying "Hello, Giorgara" before launching into the song, using an affectionate nickname for Mazonakis.
Mazonakis's death
Mazonakis died on Wednesday, September 9, at the age of 54. He suffered a cardiac arrest while at the private Stem Cell clinic in the Athens district of Kolonaki. Mazonakis was one of Greece's most popular singers, known for decades of hits across the country's pop and laiko music scenes.
Since news of his death broke, fellow musicians have been honoring him both by performing his songs at their own concerts and through posts on social media.
The song and the tribute
"Aniko Se Mena," the track Paschalidis chose to perform, was originally released by Mazonakis in 1994 and remains one of his most recognizable recordings. Paschalidis is himself an established Greek singer-songwriter.
Other social media users have also shared their own tributes to Mazonakis. One TikTok clip carried the caption "I Belong to Myself.. For Giorgos.. From Miltos," referencing the same song and Paschalidis's performance.
Another post described Mazonakis poetically as "the child of the night" who had "gone into the light," accompanied by a dove emoji, reflecting the wave of public mourning that has followed his death.
The tributes form part of a broader outpouring of grief from within the Greek music industry, with colleagues continuing to mark Mazonakis's death through covers of his songs and public messages in the days since he died.
