METLEN Energy and Resources has announced a major expansion of its battery energy storage portfolio following significant project milestones across the United Kingdom, Italy and Greece. The developments, executed through the M RESET arm of the company's Energy Division, strengthen its position in utility-scale grid infrastructure.

In the United Kingdom, METLEN signed a Balance of Plant contract with energy developer Pulse Clean Energy for the 129-megawatt Penn battery energy storage project in the West Midlands. Featuring an installed storage capacity of 362 megawatt-hours, the facility represents METLEN's largest energy storage undertaking in the UK to date.

METLEN will also execute critical grid connection works required to integrate renewable power from the facility into the national electricity network. Energization of the West Midlands plant is anticipated by the end of 2027.

The contract expands METLEN's footprint in the British energy sector as the nation updates its power grid. To date, the company has completed or is actively delivering approximately 30 battery storage units across the UK, including hybrid systems and solar-plus-storage combinations, with a cumulative capacity approaching 2 gigawatt-hours alongside leading industry partners.

Partner Pulse Clean Energy is a British battery storage developer and operator focused on electricity system decarbonization and grid integration. The company currently operates 400 megawatt-hours of battery storage, has an additional 400 megawatt-hours under construction, and targets a total capacity of 2 gigawatt-hours by 2030.

Financing landmark in Italy

In Italy, METLEN secured 18 million euros in long-term financing for a 25-megawatt / 75-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system in Brindisi province, located in the southern region of Apulia. The facility reached full operation this year and is backed by a seven-year Physical Tolling Agreement with Dolomiti Energia Group.

The financing deal is among the first of its kind in the Italian energy storage market, introducing an advanced commercial model already established across Western Europe. METLEN has operated in Italy since 2017 and currently holds a diversified Italian storage portfolio totaling approximately 3 gigawatt-hours.

Grid connection for major Greek project

In Greece, METLEN partnered with the Karatzis Group of Companies to develop the country's largest planned standalone battery storage facility. Situated in the central region of Thessaly, the 330-megawatt plant provides 790 megawatt-hours of battery storage capability, making it one of the largest installations in Europe.

The Thessaly facility's capacity has now been connected to the Greek national electricity transmission system. This step marks a major milestone toward full commercial operation and participation in grid ancillary services, which help maintain power frequency and network stability.

METLEN also completed a 48-megawatt / 96-megawatt-hour battery storage project in Polygyros, Chalkidiki, located in Central Macedonia. Named the Aenaos project, the installation was constructed under the Greece 2.0 National Recovery and Resilience Plan with funding from the European Union NextGenerationEU initiative.

Strategic role in European clean transition

METLEN stated that battery storage systems serve as an essential catalyst for Europe's broader energy transition rather than merely supplementary equipment. The company highlighted that grid-scale storage enables higher renewable integration, delivers flexible balancing services, reduces renewable energy curtailment, and strengthens overall electricity grid resilience.
