The arrest was completed late on Saturday afternoon after a specialized task force from the North Aegean Arson Crime Unit finished its investigation on the island. Investigators focused on the local official who oversees municipal waste collection after determining where the blaze originated.

According to authorities, the fire started at a location designated for dumping inert construction materials. However, regular municipal trash, tree branches, and other flammable waste had also been deposited there, creating a site where a fire could easily ignite.

Investigation and rescue operations

Witness testimony examined by the investigative division of the Mytilene Fire Service confirmed that the flames began at that exact dumping location. During the emergency, firefighters and rescue teams had to evacuate 59 people trapped in the Thanos area.

Following the rescue operations, authorities discovered that Thanos had only a single escape road available for fleeing residents and visitors. The lack of alternative routes created significant complications for emergency services managing the evacuation.

Evacuation plan reassessments

The situation on Lemnos has prompted authorities to call for an urgent re-examination of emergency escape routes and settlement evacuation strategies across the region. Officials highlighted a similar recent fire in Plomari, where narrow streets barely wide enough for two cars to pass severely restricted movement.

Officials stated that settlement evacuation plans must be completely redefined for locations facing major structural bottlenecks, specifically citing single access roads like the one in Thanos and narrow streets such as those in Plomari.

Lemnos and Lesbos are major Aegean islands in eastern Greece, with regional emergency services and judicial authorities based in Mytilene, the capital of Lesbos. Municipal sanitation deputy mayors in Greece supervise local public waste collection and municipal disposal points.
