Kia set a new sales record in the United States for August 2026, delivering 83,793 vehicles across the country as demand for hybrid cars nearly doubled.
American dealerships sold 786 more vehicles last month than during the same period in 2025. The monthly total was driven by record August performances across six key Kia nameplates: the K4, K5, Carnival, Seltos, Sportage, and Telluride.
Sales of Kia hybrid models jumped 99 percent year-on-year in August. Higher fuel prices in the US, linked to the ongoing war in Iran, helped drive American consumers toward gas-electric powertrains.
Kia Corporation, a South Korean automaker based in Seoul, has expanded its North American lineup to include gasoline, hybrid, and fully electric vehicles. While hybrid demand accelerated rapidly, sales of pure battery-electric models moved in the opposite direction.
Electric Vehicle Trends
Deliveries of the Kia EV6 electric crossover fell 60 percent in August, dropping to 712 units compared to 1,796 vehicles sold in August 2025. Sales of the larger EV9 three-row electric SUV fell by roughly one third, decreasing from 2,679 units to 1,789 units over the same timeframe.
Kia also began initial deliveries of its new budget EV3 electric vehicle, which carries a starting price of $29,890 in the US market. Dealerships sold six EV3 units during August as the model began its commercial rollout.
The Sportage compact crossover remained Kia's top-selling vehicle in the US, with monthly volume reaching 18,723 units. That brought year-to-date Sportage sales to 129,713 vehicles, representing an increase of approximately 8.5 percent over the first eight months of the year.
Model Performance and Outlook
The K4 compact sedan ranked as the brand's second most popular model in August with 12,881 units sold, followed by the Telluride SUV with 12,693 units. Telluride sales have risen 16.7 percent year-to-date, supported by the introduction of a hybrid version.
Sales of the Seltos subcompact crossover experienced a significant surge, rising 65.3 percent in August to reach 9,214 units. Kia plans to introduce a hybrid version of the Seltos later in 2026.
Between January and August 2026, Kia sold 590,377 vehicles in the US market, up roughly 3.5 percent from the 570,641 vehicles delivered during the corresponding eight-month period in 2025.
