Responding to another question about how she manages personal stress, Aniston stated that she relies on simple mindfulness techniques. She explained that she handles stress well by using deep breathing and meditation, adding that taking five deep breaths allows her to center herself and take a moment.
Overcoming chronic nerve damage
During their conversation, Curtis shared details about severe health problems he faced earlier in his life. He explained that when he was in his early 20s, doctors discovered lesions on his spinal cord, which resulted in partial paralysis and chronic nerve damage.
Addressing how individuals can navigate a serious medical diagnosis, Curtis emphasized that he was not advising patients to ignore medical instructions or walk away from their doctors. Instead, he said that people do not have to live as victims or remain trapped inside their pain, explaining that personal hardship can be transformed into strength if a person learns to accept and love their health journey.
Concealing medical struggles
Curtis also admitted on stage that he hid the true cause of his mobility issues for many years. He acknowledged that he routinely told people his difficulty walking was caused by a motorcycle accident because he felt ashamed of facing a medical condition and felt broken. He added that he believed attributing his condition to a motorcycle crash appeared more masculine.
Curtis noted that it took him approximately 25 years to overcome those deep insecurities. He explained that he was eventually able to move past his embarrassment through a process of self-acceptance and self-love.
At the conclusion of the 30-minute discussion, Aniston expressed her gratitude to the attending audience and warmly embraced Curtis on stage before the couple walked off together.
