A heatwave affecting Italy will continue for another week before temperatures begin to drop gradually on August 18, according to weather forecasts. Local downpours are possible on Tuesday afternoon, but temperatures will rise again on Wednesday to reach 40 degrees, up to seven degrees above seasonal averages, the Athens News Agency reported.
Nighttime heat will also remain intense, with temperatures across most of Italy staying above 25 degrees. Thursday is expected to be the most humid day of the week.
Emergency alerts in 19 cities
Civil Protection personnel, volunteers, and nursing staff will be on alert on Wednesday in 19 cities due to heat risks for the elderly and vulnerable, the Italian Meteorological Service stated. The alert comes as 55 of the 80 days since the first heatwave began on May 24 have been marked by intense African heat.
