The horror film Insidious: They Are Among Us has opened in Dominican Republic cinemas, starring Amelia Eve as a mother who discovers entities from the astral realm can now enter the living world.
The new entry in the long-running supernatural franchise shifts the rules of its universe by allowing spirits from The Further to cross over directly into the physical realm, posing an immediate threat to the living.
Gemma, played by Amelia Eve, lives with her daughter Maya in the house where she grew up. After discovering she can travel into the astral plane known as The Further, Gemma finds she can also bring physical objects and entities back with her into reality. What begins as an extraordinary ability quickly escalates into a severe danger for her and her family.
Paranormal investigator Elise Rainier, played by Lin Shaye, returns to the film to assist with the crisis. Shaye has appeared in every previous entry of the series, providing a direct connection between the new story and the established mythology of the franchise.
The Insidious series, created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell, is a major fixture of modern horror cinema. Known for its depiction of sinister spirits lurking in The Further, the franchise has expanded across multiple films produced by Blumhouse Productions.
Director and everyday horror settings
Director and writer Jacob Chase took charge of the project after previously collaborating with producers James Wan and Jason Blum. Chase drew on personal experience while writing the screenplay, explaining that his wife was pregnant at the time and that his own anxieties about fatherhood shaped the story.
To heighten the tension, Chase set key horror sequences in everyday environments. One major scene takes place in a dentist office, while another transforms a domestic pillow fort into a claustrophobic maze where supernatural entities stalk the characters.
The pillow fort sequence required approximately 250 cushions, complex cable setups, and moving structural elements built on set. Eve described shooting the sequence early in production as a baptism of fire for her role in the film.
Demonic entities and practical stunts
Several iconic villains from earlier films make a return, including KeyFace, Doll Girl, the Bride in Black, and the Lipstick-Face Demon. They are joined by a new antagonist named Cyrus, a powerful demon who sees Gemma as an opportunity to return to the world of the living.
For the climax of the film, the production team assembled dozens of actors and extras transformed into monsters. Over 100 individual entities appear on screen during the sequence to demonstrate the vast scale of The Further.
Young actress Island Austin, who portrays Gemma's daughter Maya, drew on her background as a stunt performer to execute her own physical action scenes. Working alongside stunt specialist Molly Miller, Austin completed wire work, fall scenes, and physical drags during filming.
Actor Brandon Perea plays Gemma's boyfriend Nick, a protective partner who becomes caught in the supernatural conflict. Perea revealed that he was already a dedicated fan of the franchise, having watched all five previous Insidious movies before receiving the role.
Themes of motherhood and family trauma
Despite its focus on spectral threats and jump scares, the filmmakers emphasize that the story remains anchored in family relationships. The emotional core of the narrative centers on the bond between Gemma and Maya, tackling themes of motherhood, inherited trauma, and the fear of repeating past mistakes.
