Humanoid robots competing in specialized robot Olympic games have broken the 100-metre sprinting record set by Jamaican running legend Usain Bolt. The athletic demonstrations showed machines running at unprecedented speeds alongside competitions in dance and martial arts.

Digital and innovation journalist Anicet Mbida presented footage of the events during the French morning television programme Bonjour ! La Matinale TF1. The broadcasts featured humanoid robots performing samba dance routines and executing Japanese martial arts techniques.

Commenting on the dance performances, Mbida noted that despite the clear influence of algorithms and sensors, the movements remained impressive. He highlighted a robot performing a kata, a structured series of martial arts movements, describing the choreography as precise to the millimeter and the gestures as perfectly controlled.

Sports training and table tennis

Beyond entertainment, the technological advances allow machines to serve as training partners for human athletes. Mbida explained that developers have created a humanoid robot capable of maintaining tennis rallies with human players, marking a major milestone for machines standing independently on two legs.

When leg stabilization constraints are removed, robots can achieve even greater agility in table tennis. Mounted on wheeled bases rather than humanoid legs, these specialized machines do not need to spend time balancing themselves. Consequently, they process ball trajectories faster without tiring and have managed to defeat professional human table tennis players for the first time.

Industrial applications and research

The athletic competitions double as research laboratories for future real-world applications. Mbida explained that developing machines capable of moving with high agility on smooth wooden floors or martial arts tatami mats directly informs industrial design.

Engineers plan to transfer these agility algorithms to commercial environments. In the near future, the same movement systems could power nimble robots working in factories, logistics warehouses, and eventually private homes.

Combat sports and human safety

The rapid evolution of robotics has prompted questions about whether direct competitions between humans and machines will soon take place. Mbida stated that while some experts are considering human-versus-machine events, current tournaments remain strictly robot-versus-robot.

A recent milestone included a first mixed martial arts tournament featuring machines. Mbida clarified that the combat robots were not autonomous systems, but were piloted remotely by human operators on the sidelines.

Piloted combat machines could transform the future of contact sports by eliminating physical trauma. Instead of human fighters risking severe injuries in the ring, pilots could control mechanized surrogates to battle in their place. The showcase coincided with the conclusion of the World Robot Games in Beijing, China, which drew enthusiastic crowds of spectators.
