Extremely hot weather is directly linked to increased alcohol consumption among adults over 50 years old in the United States, according to a study by researchers at the University of Georgia.

The research, published in the medical journal JMIR Aging, found that exposure to 30 or more days with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius led to a 6.3 percent increase in alcohol intake.

Scientists analyzed more than 20 years of data from over 20,000 Americans, matching individual drinking habits against local weather observations. Each additional day with temperatures above 35 degrees was associated with a slight rise in the amount of alcohol consumed.

The connection between extreme heat and drinking was significantly stronger among adults who had experienced adverse events during childhood. Researchers noted that individuals who grew up around parental alcohol or substance abuse problems showed a higher tendency to drink during heatwaves.

A history of negative interactions with law enforcement during childhood was also tied to higher alcohol consumption during hot weather. Conversely, adults who reported having a good relationship with their father in childhood demonstrated a lower inclination to drink during extreme heat.

Health hazards during extreme weather

The study's authors suggested that extreme heat acts as an additional physical and psychological stress factor. In response, many individuals perceive alcohol as a familiar coping mechanism to relax or cool down.

However, health experts caution that consuming alcohol during heatwaves is dangerous. Alcohol is a natural diuretic that accelerates dehydration by causing the body to lose fluids rapidly. Combined with high ambient temperatures, drinking increases strain on the cardiovascular system as the heart pumps faster to regulate internal body temperature.

The University of Georgia, established in 1785 and based in Athens, Georgia, is a public research university that conducts extensive public health research. Its researchers published the study in JMIR Aging, an open-access journal focused on health technologies, aging, and preventive care for older populations.

Impact of social isolation

The authors noted that environmental stressors like heatwaves add to a range of recognized triggers for alcohol use. Previous research established that social isolation also increases a person's vulnerability to higher alcohol consumption.
