Scientists analyzing a meteorite that crashed through a house roof in Hillsboro, New York, have discovered hundreds of amino acids inside the space rock.

The discovery of several hundred organic compounds in the 1.35-kilogram fragment has brought the total number of amino acids known to science close to 500, according to a report by news outlet hvg. Most of the newly identified molecules do not occur naturally on Earth.

Amino acids serve as the fundamental structural building blocks of proteins, which construct cellular tissues and regulate essential biochemical processes in biological organisms. Every known living species on Earth, from fungi and plants to animals and humans, relies on a restricted set of just 22 amino acids to sustain life.

The space rock arrived on July 16, 2024, after a brilliant fireball streaked across the daytime sky over New York state. Although atmospheric friction destroyed the majority of the incoming meteoroid, the fragment weighing about 1.35 kilograms survived re-entry and smashed through the roof of a home in Hillsboro.

Extraterrestrial Chemical Discoveries

Research into cosmic objects has long shown that the broader universe contains far more molecular varieties than those used in terrestrial biology. In 1969, researchers examining the famous Murchison meteorite that fell in Australia detected 92 amino acids, only 19 of which were known to exist on Earth.

Scientists believe that many extraterrestrial amino acids form directly in deep space within icy shells covering interstellar dust particles. Under the influence of ultraviolet radiation and cosmic rays, simple compounds such as water, carbon monoxide, and ammonia undergo chemical reactions that produce complex organic molecules.

However, researchers suggest the amino acids within the Hillsboro specimen formed through a different process. Scientists suspect liquid water played a central role during early chemical reactions on the parent celestial body before this space rock separated and eventually traveled to Earth.

Unsolved Mysteries of Cosmic Life

Scientists remain uncertain why terrestrial life evolved to utilize only a small fraction of the vast array of available amino acids. Researchers noted that the discovery proves space contains countless unidentified complex molecules, which could help resolve how and where the building blocks of life originated.

The retrieval of meteorites remains a major focus for researchers globally, who frequently gather space rocks from the frozen expanse of Antarctica. Scientists explained that meteorites do not fall on the Antarctic continent more often than elsewhere, but geographic and weather conditions, where shifting ice and wind act as natural sorting machines, make them easier to spot.
