American actress and singer Hayden Panettiere has died at the age of 36 in Greenville, South Carolina, five days before her birthday.

The star passed away on August 16, 2026, her representative confirmed, describing her passing as a tragic loss. Local police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding her death, while an official cause of death has not yet been announced.

Her representative stated that Panettiere was an incredible light and force who brought love and joy to those who knew her as well as to millions of fans watching her on screen.

Health struggles and medical history

The actress had long suffered from health issues, and sources cited by entertainment outlet TMZ indicated that her death may be linked to ongoing medical conditions. In the months leading up to her death, Panettiere had complained of suffering from severe back pain, though it remains undisclosed whether she had sought medical treatment for the condition.

Panettiere had previously spoken openly about her personal battles with health and addiction. Several years ago, she publicly detailed the physical consequences of her alcoholism, which developed during a hiatus from her acting career. She had also sought professional treatment for postpartum depression in 2016 following the birth of her daughter.

Early career and breakout roles

Born in New York on August 21, 1989, to a firefighter father and a former television actress mother, Panettiere began her career in entertainment while still an infant. She appeared in her first print advertisement at eight months old and featured in a commercial for a toy train set at 11 months.

She made her television acting debut at the age of four in the long-running ABC soap opera One Life to Live, created by television writer Agnes Nixon. By the age of 11, Panettiere gained widespread recognition starring alongside Denzel Washington in the 2000 biographical sports drama Remember the Titans, playing Sheryl Yoast, the daughter of football coach Bill Yoast. Her performance earned her a Young Artist Award.

Panettiere went on to achieve global fame for her television roles, most notably portraying cheerleader Claire Bennet in the NBC science-fiction drama series Heroes and country music star Juliette Barnes in the musical drama series Nashville. Her film credits included prominent roles in Scream 4 and Scream 6, as well as lead appearances in Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy, Lies My Mother Told Me, and It: Nightmare.

Relationship with Wladimir Klitschko

In addition to her screen career, Panettiere attracted significant public attention through her high-profile relationship with former Ukrainian world heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko. The couple began dating in 2009 and announced their engagement four years later in 2013.

On December 9, 2014, the couple welcomed their daughter, Kaya Evdokia Klitschko. The pair remained together for several years before ending their engagement and separating in the summer of 2018.

Reflections on life in the spotlight

Reflecting on her early entry into show business, Panettiere once revealed the intense pressures she faced as a child performer, stating that she felt compelled to pursue acting as a mandatory profession. She explained that she had been prepared for her career like a little soldier, with no room for objection, simply following directions to memorize lines, hit performance marks, and obey the director.

Despite her lengthy career in front of the camera, Panettiere noted that she frequently reconsidered her career path throughout her life. She also observed that her young daughter, Kaya Evdokia, showed no interest in following her footsteps into the acting industry.
