Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the Civil Protection Operations and Crisis Management Coordination Centre on Saturday morning, accompanied by Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou, for a briefing on wildfires burning across the country and particularly the fire at Porto Germeno.
Officials noted that strong winds continue to affect aerial operations in the area. Aircraft are unable to make water drops due to turbulence, meaning only helicopters are currently able to operate. Ground forces have been deployed in greater numbers, and Special Forest Operations Units have pushed into difficult terrain.
Following the briefing, officials discussed anti-erosion works that will begin immediately in the affected areas, as well as a damage assessment to be carried out by the State Aid agency.
