Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis has died at the age of 54 after suffering cardiac arrest during a medical procedure at a private clinic in Kolonaki.
Emergency medical services transferred the performer from the Stem Cell clinic to Elpis Hospital in Athens, where medical staff confirmed his death. Mazonakis was one of Greece's most prominent modern vocalists, known for a career spanning more than three decades in popular laiko music. The Kolonaki neighborhood, located in central Athens, is known for hosting private medical practices and specialty clinics.
Medical treatment and police investigation
The cardiac arrest occurred while Mazonakis was undergoing therapeutic plasmapheresis at the Stem Cell clinic. Dr. Ioanna Gaka, the physician who proposed and administered the treatment, stated that Mazonakis had visited the practice the previous day, at which point she informed him that the procedure carried no side effects. The practice was jointly operated by Dr. Gaka and Dr. Theodoropoulos.
An investigation by Greek police, known as ELAS, revealed that the plasmapheresis procedure was actively underway when the singer suffered heart failure. Security camera footage gathered by investigators contradicted initial statements provided by the attending doctors regarding the timing of his arrival. The footage showed that Mazonakis entered the clinic shortly after 1:00 p.m., rather than after 4:00 p.m. as the medical staff had claimed.

The singer's sudden death occurred shortly before he was scheduled to mark a major milestone in his musical career. Mazonakis had been preparing to perform an anniversary concert on September 20 at Technopolis, a major cultural venue and industrial museum complex in the Gazi district of Athens. The concert was organized to celebrate his 33 years in the music industry.
Several weeks prior to his death, Mazonakis posted a reminder about the upcoming event to his online followers on Instagram. The final message accompanying the social media post called him onto the stage, serving as his last public communication to fans before the performance was permanently cancelled.

Before his death, Mazonakis had expressed an intention to draft a formal will to settle his affairs. However, he did not manage to complete the document before his passing. As a result, his entire estate will pass directly to his surviving family members under standard inheritance rules.

Television producer Acun Ilıcalı stated that he would always remember Mazonakis for his unique soul and big heart. Singer Elena Paparizou wrote that the performer was one of a kind and described him as an emperor of the Greek music scene.
Musician Sakis Rouvas expressed that words were insufficient to convey the loss and wished his friend a peaceful journey. Performing live on stage, singer Elli Kokkinou paid tribute by stating that Mazonakis sought to give immense love to his audience while seeking their acceptance and appreciation in return.
