The Chinese automaker Geely has set a new altitude record for production vehicles after its Galaxy Battleship 700 SUV climbed to 6,001 meters above sea level under its own power.
According to a report by the technology publication ITHome, the test vehicle completed the high-altitude ascent without receiving any special modifications. The drive was highlighted as a notable milestone for the global automotive industry.
The Galaxy Battleship 700 is a large plug-in hybrid vehicle powered by a three-motor all-wheel drive system with a differential lock. The hybrid setup generates a combined power output of 830 kW and delivers maximum torque at the wheels of 13,920 Nm.
Geely stated that the SUV achieves a power-to-weight ratio of 392 horsepower per tonne, which the company claims is among the highest figures for production SUVs in the world. Based in Hangzhou, Geely is one of China's major vehicle manufacturers. Plug-in hybrids combine electric drive motors with conventional engines, allowing vehicles to maintain power output in thin high-altitude air where standard combustion engines often struggle due to oxygen depletion.
Vehicle dimensions and interior features
The SUV features a large, angular body measuring 5,085 mm in length with a wheelbase of 2,900 mm. Inside the cabin, designers retained physical buttons and dedicated selectors for driving modes. Additional interior equipment reported for the vehicle includes a panoramic roof and an audio system integrated directly into the headrests of the front seats.
Off-road capability and market release
For off-road conditions, the vehicle incorporates an intelligent all-wheel drive system capable of automatically distributing traction between the front and rear axles. Geely said the powertrain supports sideways crab-walk movement, 180-degree turns on the spot, and the ability to continue moving even after a tire puncture occurs.
The vehicle is capable of wading through water obstacles up to 800 mm deep and comes equipped with satellite communication technology. Geely positions the Galaxy Battleship 700 as a hardcore off-road vehicle enhanced by artificial intelligence, with the serial production model expected to launch within a year.
