Peruvian President Fujimori used her July 28 address to promise the country method, discipline, perseverance and a clear path forward, in what commentator Mario Ghibellini described as a criollo adaptation of Winston Churchill’s appeal to blood, effort, tears and sweat.
Ghibellini wrote that the promise sounded encouraging to many Peruvians who had been let down by the inaugural speeches of Fujimori’s predecessors in office.
The columnist cautioned, however, that political illusions tend not to last long. He argued that the core quality Fujimori’s new administration appeared to offer was coherence, but that coherence began to falter within the speech itself as soon as she shifted from general principles to concrete announcements.
