The Ecuadorian port city of Guayaquil is hosting the inaugural Fortin Gamer video game tournament, offering free registration for players competing in the popular mobile title Free Fire.
Organized at the Mall El Fortin shopping center in northwestern Guayaquil, the competition opens on August 29 to mark World Video Game Day, known locally as Dia del Gamer.
Online qualifying rounds will allow contestants to compete from their personal mobile devices, using private access codes to enter dedicated match rooms. Successful players will advance to the live semi-finals on September 19 at Mall El Fortin, ahead of the grand final at the shopping complex on September 20.
Free Fire is a free-to-play battle royale mobile game developed by 111dots Studio and published by Garena, in which players drop onto an island to search for resources and outlast rivals. Mall El Fortin is a major commercial retail center serving northwestern Guayaquil, Ecuador's principal port city and economic hub.
Tournament schedule and prizes
On August 29, starting at 3:00 p.m., Mall El Fortin will host interactive activities for visitors, including photo spaces, 360-degree video booths, and themed event dynamics.
To enter the tournament, participants must register online at www.fortingamer.com by submitting their national identity card number, player ID, and WhatsApp phone number. Registration confirmations will be sent directly through WhatsApp.
Top-ranking competitors will receive technology prizes provided by smartphone manufacturer Honor. The tournament winner will receive an Honor Magic8 Lite smartphone, while the second-place player will win an Honor X8D smartphone. Third place will receive Honor Earbuds and a Bluetooth speaker.
Shifting views on gaming culture
Fortin Gamer producer Henry Hill said the tournament offers players an opportunity to demonstrate their gaming skills in individual battles where competitors must defend themselves and gather all available resources to reach victory.
Hill described Gamer Day as an important validation of gaming culture, noting that most gamers are highly social individuals who enjoy creative forms of entertainment.
He added that public perception of video games has changed radically since the 1990s and 2000s, transforming from what was once considered a solitary activity into a shared space that links physical and virtual communities.
According to Hill, while physical public parks previously served as traditional meeting spots, video games now fulfill that role by fostering camaraderie across generations, connecting 17-year-olds with adults up to age 35 who share the same online passion.
Ecuadorian talent and industry potential
Hill highlighted that technological development and gamification can enhance intellectual capabilities and problem-solving skills in younger generations. He noted that gaming encourages young people to sit before a computer to solve complex problems rather than passively watching videos or consuming social media content.
Addressing the broader gaming industry, Hill expressed confidence in Ecuador's potential, stating that nothing is impossible in the country. He suggested that Ecuador could serve the global video game sector effectively by leveraging the artistic talent of its society.
He added that the country's diverse cultural heritage provides distinct artistic perspectives, noting that a young person from the Andean capital of Quito brings a different viewpoint than someone from Guayaquil or the Amazon region. Hill said this multicultural background gives Ecuadorian creators unique insights that North American developers cannot replicate.
Hill expressed high expectations for the inaugural Fortin Gamer tournament and confirmed that he hopes to host future editions of the event.
