Customs officers in Frankfurt seized 62,400 suspected counterfeit energy drink cans during a check at the city's Osthafen. The Frankfurt Main Customs Office said the drinks were found in a truck on July 19 and have since been destroyed.
According to the customs office, the shipment held around 15,000 liters of the drinks, weighing a total of 16.3 tons. Customs estimated the potential resale value at nearly 100,000 euros.
Known brands imitated
Customs said the colors, logos and design of the cans were copied closely enough to resemble well-known energy drink brands. The affected brand owners were notified, confirmed the goods were counterfeit, and requested that they be destroyed.
Shipping documents showed the drinks came from Afghanistan and were bound for sale in France.
Customs warns of fakes
The customs office said the seizure prevented the counterfeits from reaching the market. It added that counterfeit products cause economic harm to brand manufacturers and can also mislead consumers.
