Former French president François Hollande received a surprise 72nd birthday gift when political allies put up 500 posters celebrating his presidential record across France and overseas.
The secret campaign was organized by a small group of supporters to mark his birthday on Wednesday, August 12. Brightly colored posters were pasted in public locations to highlight key achievements from his five year term in office.
The visual displays feature twelve distinct themes focusing on policy areas such as education, public finances, and taxation. Each poster uses the slogan As president alongside concrete statistics from his 2012 to 2017 mandate at the Élysée Palace.

The campaign details specific legislative and economic figures from Hollande's presidency. One design notes that 60,000 teachers were recruited into the national education system, fulfilling a cornerstone pledge from his 2012 campaign to bolster French schools.
Another poster highlights fiscal management, pointing to a reduction in the national public deficit over his five year term. Social reforms are also featured, with displays stating that 650,000 French citizens were able to retire at age 60 under modified pension rules.
The posters also highlight civil rights milestones from his tenure, specifically noting that marriage became marriage for all. Hollande signed the landmark legislation legalizing same sex marriage into French law in May 2013 after extensive parliamentary debate.
Secret operation organized across France and abroad
The birthday operation was planned in complete secrecy by political allies. Organizers of the campaign included Wilfrid Pailhès and Philippe Buisson, the mayor of Libourne, a commune in the Gironde department of southwestern France.
After the materials were printed, participants packed the posters and took them to their respective holiday destinations. The displays were subsequently posted across regions of France and in international locations including Japan and the Middle East.
Supporters shared images of the campaign on social media on August 12. Pailhès posted photos showing the colorful posters while wishing a happy birthday to his friend, while the youth group Les Jeunes avec Hollande also highlighted the nationwide poster drop on X.

Pailhès stated that the surprise initiative brought a smile to Hollande's face and made the former head of state laugh a lot. Following the public appearance of the posters, Hollande reportedly received a large volume of messages from supporters.
Organizers stressed that the poster initiative was a personal gesture by friends and was not an operation coordinated with the Socialist Party. Hollande served as head of the Socialist Party for over a decade before winning the presidency in 2012.
Hollande currently serves in the National Assembly as the deputy for Corrèze, a department in central France, having returned to parliament in 2024.
